ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN GRADUATE PROGRAM SUMMER SCHOOL WORKSHOPS

July 09 - July 24, 2018
santralistanbul Campus

Architectural Design Graduate Summer School No:3, organized by İstanbul Bilgi University Architectural Design Graduate Program is going to take place between 09 July - 25 July 2018.

Each workshop received and successfully completed will be counted as a 5-credit elective undergraduate course (when 4-coded courses are selected) or an elective graduate course (when 5-coded courses are selected). When two workshops are received and successfully completed, they will be equivalent of two elective courses of 5 credits or - for graduate students - a graduate project studio of 10 credits.

Last Date for Registration: June 29, 2018

Robotic Earth Crafts

Can digital design and robot technology be integrated with an ecological design approach? The "Robotic Earth Crafts" Summer School is an attempt to relate to natural parameters and the digital design and fabrication processes. The Summer School will include seminars and practices on computational design, robotic fabrication, rammed-earth construction technique and permaculture design principles to discuss and experience the relationships between technology and ecology. The end results will be the proposals for micro-permaculture systems, constructed from rammed-earth blocks, with plantings.

Robotic Earth Crafts Phase 1 - ARCH 561 / ARCH 477 - DESIGN STUDIES (July 09-16, 2018)
The first phase of the Robotic Earth Crafts Summer School will include seminars and practices on mathematical surfaces, robot technology, and rammed-earth construction techniques. At the end of the first phase, the participating groups will design their block systems and fabricate their molds with the help of Kuka robot. Using these molds, several rammed-earth blocks will be produced.

Robotic Earth Crafts Phase 2 - ARCH 562 / ARCH 478 - DESIGN PRACTICES (July 17-24, 2018)
The second phase of the Robotic Earth-Crafts Summer School will begin with seminars on permaculture design principles. The systems that were successful in the first phase will be revised and further developed by integrating these principles. The relationships between geometric forms, solar path, irrigation, plants and the human body will be experienced during the design development process. Groups of participants will revise and re-produce the structural systems.

The outcomes of this process, the micro-permaculture systems including plant reservoirs, can be considered as urban furniture, elements for spatial arrangements, landscape design elements or sketches of urban gardens. They will be the prototypes of the integration between digital fabrication and the use of local and natural materials and techniques.
