The project of BİLGİ Department of Genetics and Bioengineering students Ayşe Nilay Seyhan and Dilay Fatoğlu, aiming to develop a hydrogel system for cancer treatment, received TÜBİTAK grant
The project “Effect of Double Layer PVA-Alginate Hydrogel Loaded with Natural Anticancer Agent Sulforaphane Extracted from Brassica oleracea L. var. viridis L. on Breast Cancer Cell Line MCF-7” developed by BİLGİ Department of Genetics and Bioengineering students Ayşe Nilay Seyhan and Dilay Fatoğlu under the supervision of Faculty Member, Ali Deniz Dalgıç, PhD, was entitled to be supported within the scope of 2209-A Research Project Support Programme for Undergraduate Students.
The project, which offers an innovative approach, aims to develop a hydrogel system containing an anti-cancer agent to be placed in the wound area to remove cancerous cells that often remain around the tumor after tumor removal operations and cause cancer to recur. The anti-cancer agent obtained from Brassica oleracea L. var. viridis L., known as kale, will be trapped in the hydrogel system to be created and the effectiveness of the system will be examined in vitro on the breast cancer cell line. Hydrogels carrying the active substance will contribute to the development of systems that can release effective local anti-cancer agents after tumor removal operation.
