Exchanges in Communication: Refugees, Non-Politicization and Representation

The way individuals perceive immigrants and refugees bring about normative concerns pertaining to migrant rights, interests and needs. What are our responsibilities towards migrants and refugees? How ‘should’ we perceive such matters? More attention is warranted to understand ways in which ‘migrants’ are framed and discussed within the public forums of any sort.

This talk will first present, in an abstract level, how the process of ‘non-politicization’ is detrimental to our understanding of refugee and migrant mobility. Second, the preliminary results of a media content analysis will be provided that explores how the news items on Syrian asylum seekers have been framed and presented in Turkish mainstream media.

Yusuf Yüksekdağ:
Yusuf Yüksekdağ works and teaches in the fields of applied ethics, political philosophy and media studies. He was recently a visiting researcher at the Institute of Philosophy, University of Bern. He received his PhD in Applied Ethics from the Department of Culture and Communication, Linköping University.
