Cultural Heritage and Community Engagement

“Plural Heritages of Istanbul: The Case of the Land Walls” is a collaborative project involving Newcastle University, İstanbul Bilgi University and Bursa Uludağ University that ran between 2016-2018.

The project was supported by TÜBİTAK Katip Çelebi (Turkey) and Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK) Newton Fund. The aim of the research was to explore how to engage communities with the cultural heritage in historic urban settings. In recent years, there have been studies on community-based heritage valorisation and how to represent this in museums in order to pluralise our understandings of heritage and memory. We have explored the site along the Istanbul Land Walls with the people who live in its vicinity and this has revealed many layers of the previously hidden heritage values of the Land Walls. The project represents cutting-edge practice and research, as well as providing tools and resources for heritage practitioners interested in community co-production, rethinking heritage value and using digital and mobile technology to present different stories of places, people and sites.
