Workshop: Bringing Mughal and Ottoman History Together

Ottoman historians and their colleagues dealing with the early modern (in India: medieval) period have recently become more and more interested in each others’ work, and there are even attempts to teach Ottoman history at Delhi University and Mughal history at İstanbul Bilgi University.

While some research has been undertaken on travellers and pilgrims visiting the world inhabited by “the others”, a more important focus of interest are the parallel institutions developed by the two dynasties. While the parallels are intriguing, it is also clear that in two very different social and political contexts, similar institutions functioned in totally different ways.
